Sermon Preview – Week of February 13

This Sunday Richard Boswell will preaching. Please pray for him this week as he prepares to deliver God’s Word to us. You will find Richard’s sermon preview below, take some time this week to read through it in preparation for hearing God’s Word on Sunday.

What is the difference between other ancient writings and the Bible? The author of Hebrews answers this decisively by stating that the Word of God is “living and active” (Heb. 4:12). He describes the Word in terms of God speaking: “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Heb. 1:1-2a). Several times, he mentions God’s voice: “Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness…” (3:7; 3:15; 4:7). Just as God spoke to Israel so that they would believe and obey, He still speaks to us by His Son, who is revealed to us in the Scriptures. The Scriptures are compared to a weapon, a two-edged sword. It is meant for war. Much like the Israelites, we find ourselves in a battle to persevere in our faith. We are tempted to give up. Many times, we are deceived into thinking that a life of sin would be more pleasurable than a life devoted to following Christ. God is still speaking to us today through the Word, effectively exposing our sin and leading us back to faithfulness. We have an awesome weapon at our disposal, for through His Word God works on our hearts. May we submit ourselves to this double-edged sword and call others to do the same.
