Sermon Preview – Week of May 8

The sermon text for this Sunday will be John 1:1-18. These eighteen verses contain John’s prologue or introductory remarks that lead into the rest of his gospel account. The prologue is extremely important because it introduces the major themes that will be worked out over the rest of the narrative (as you read through the prologue see how many themes you can pin point). It serves the reader as a kind of looking glass for the body of the gospel. For example, if the body of the gospel (1:19-20:31) is a target we are to see and hit, then the prologue (1:1-18) serves as the scope to bring that target into focus. The most important thing that John does in his prologue is to introduce us to the gospel’s main character, the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ. As we prayerfully and humbly read this most glorious passage may the Lord open our eyes to see, ears to hear, minds to understand and hearts to believe in His grace!
