Sermon Preview – Week of October 2

The preaching text for Sunday will be John 6:1-21. If Jesus is drawing a line in the sand with the religious leaders in chapter five, he is drawing a line in the sand with the crowds following him in chapter six. We will see the masses abandon Jesus by the end of the chapter, but in the verses leading up to that event we have a couple of miracles where Jesus is making clear to the crowds who exactly he is. This Sunday we will consider the miracle of the “Feeding of the 5000”, but tucked into this most familiar account is another miracle. It’s what we see happen afterwards with the disciples in the boat on the stormy waters. Two miracles in one account! Not only is Jesus demonstrating who he is to the crowd, but he is demonstrating who he is to the disciples as well. What are we supposed to take away from each of these accounts? Why does the feeding miracle matter to us? Why does Jesus’ miracle on the water matter to us? Are they merely good stories for us to learn about in Sunday School? No, they are much more substantial than that. They matter because they contain light and life. They are more than just good stories, they are here so that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and by believing have eternal life in his name.
