Our preaching text for this coming Lord’s Day worship gathering will be John 6:35-59. This is a continuation of the “Bread of Life” discourse that Jesus began in the previous verses of this chapter. In the beginning verses of this discourse Jesus is revealing the purpose of the feeding miracle that took place the day before. He miraculously fed the crowd of people to show them that he is indeed the bread of God that comes down from heaven. He provided the physical satisfaction of bread to show that he is the source of spiritual satisfaction. And now, in our text this week, Jesus will unpack the dynamic relationship between God and humanity in relation to a person’s partaking of the bread of life enduring to eternal life. Perhaps the more common way we have heard this described is, God’s sovereignty in salvation and man’s responsibility. Essentially, these are the two elements that are worked out in our text this week. May the Word stir us to be in awe of God and thankful for his grace! May it encourage us to persevere in faith and hope!
