This Sunday the preaching text will be Philippians 3:12-16. Having exposed the Judaizers and their message of righteousness through works of the law as false (3:1-6), Paul unpacks the glorious truth of what it means, by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, to be a child of God t (3:7-11). To be a child of God means that we know Christ Jesus the Lord as our supreme gain. It means that we count anything that is not Christ as loss, there is nothing that matches the worth of Christ. It means that by grace through faith we have the righteousness that comes from God, the very righteousness of the Spotless Lamb, Jesus Christ. It means that we know the power of His resurrection, that we share His sufferings being made like Him in His death. It means that we eagerly anticipate the day He will return, where we will enjoy a perfect and sinless fellowship with Him for all eternity. Now, having said all of this in a very thorough and convincing way, Paul wants to make sure that he isn’t misunderstood. He wants to make sure that they don’t think he is saying that he has already arrived, that he has reached perfection in this life. In our text this week, Paul holds out a picture of what the Christian life looks like. He uses the illustration of one who is running a race. What does this race look like? What’s going on in this race? How should it be run? What motivates the runner in this race? What awaits the runner at the finish line? These are just several things that we can be thinking about as we read the text this week. May we all see more clearly what the Christian life is, and be encouraged in the race to greater faith as we await the return of our Savior King!
