Pleading for Protection

“Let your hand be ready to help me,
for I have chosen your precepts.” Psalm 119.173

As the psalmist continues his final appeal, he again pleads with the Lord for protection. He calls for the Lord to be ready, to have his hand of protection ready. He anticipates his need for protection and seeks the Lord for it.

Why does he anticipate this need for protection? He does so because he has devoted himself to keeping God’s precepts, and he knows that decision will be met with opposition. He’s made this point throughout the psalm. The world is opposed to God and his Word, therefore the world is opposed to those who keep God’s Word. Knowing this, the psalmist pleads to the Lord to care for him.

Friend, if you seek to live your life according to the Word of God, you will face opposition to the world. Thankfully, the hand of the Lord is ready and strong to protect you. Rely on Him. Call to Him. Trust in him to protect you.

Are you committed to keeping the precepts of God? Are you trusting in him for protection? How often do you seek the Lord for protection and vindication? How often do you praise him for that protection and vindication?

Our refuge and our rock, we have chosen the way of your precepts. Guard us and defend us, O Lord. Keep us from falling to the left or the right. Fix our steps and guard our path—according to your Word. Amen.
