Sermon Preview – Week of August 21

This Sunday we have the privilege of welcoming Eric Weathers to Grace Community. Eric will be leading a workshop for us, addressing a Biblical approach to vocation. The workshop will take place on Saturday (9AM-12PM) and then Eric will preach on Sunday morning. I will supply all of the information for the weekend below (along with the songs we will sing together on Sunday). Please pray for Eric, and for all those able to attend as we strive to honor God in our vocation, whether that be in an office, on a farm, as a stay-at-home mom, or someone who has retired from the workforce. There is something here for all of us!

*We will be observing the Lord’s Supper together on Sunday morning

As a native of Southern California, Eric was graduated from The Master’s University and served as a youth pastor at Grace Church in Sun Valley, CA in the 80’s while attending The Master’s Seminary. After a 20-year career in many management and executive advisory roles at FedEx, Eric returned to TMS to complete his MDiv and then pastored in Kentucky and Bryan, Texas. Eric is completing his Doctor of Ministry at TMS. The title of his twelve-sermon preaching project is: Work in a Manner Worthy of your Calling: Practicing Biblical Principles in the Marketplace. As the Sr. Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at The Master’s Academy International (TMAI), Eric provides strategic global communications and reporting to TMAI’s expanding partners and major donor constituency. Eric and Debbie have two adult children, Erica, their daughter, and her husband Kyle have a little girl, Karis. Their son David and his wife Emily reside in Albuquerque, NM where he serves as an officer in the US Air Force.

Overall theme of this coming weekend:
The entire weekend drives toward one key theme (which also bears the title of my doctoral dissertation): “Work in a Manner Worthy of your Calling: Practicing Biblical Principles in the Marketplace.”

Saturday Morning Workshops:
I’ll do two major sections, each should contain about 45-50 minutes of teaching followed by about 20-25 minutes of discussion group interaction (depending on time, I am prepared to only have one discussion group). These discussion groups will be given a couple of case scenarios, real world situations, to challenge the attendees to pull from Scripture to help them think through how to work in a manner worthy of their calling in the workplace.

The first section is from Ephesians 6:5-9 and is entitled “Practicing Biblical Labor Relations.”

The second section is from Psalm 15 and is entitled “Keys to Effective Worship in the Marketplace.”

Sunday morning worship service:
In keeping with the overall theme: “Work in a Manner Worthy of your Calling: Practicing Biblical Principles in the Marketplace,” this sermon is taken from I Thessalonians 4:1, 9-12 and is entitled “Work: What’s Love Got To Do With It?”

Sunday night service:
This service takes a bit of a twist from Saturday and Sunday morning. The thrust here is to consider the manner in which the Lord blesses us in the marketplace has a direct correlation to how we bless Him in His call for us to make disciples in our home church and of all nations.

The title for the evening service is “Make Disciples of All Nations: But How?” (Selected Scripture).

Taking our guide from selected Scripture, I’ll demonstrate how TMAI partners with God’s people to strategically provide a sound, biblical approach to making disciples of all nations.

Meditation Passage: Genesis 1:26-31

Call To Worship: Revelation 5:9-13

Benediction: Hebrews 12:1-2

Songs For Sunday:

Hail The Day

And Can It Be

His Mercy Is More

He Giveth More Grace

The Power Of The Cross

When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
