Sermon Preview – Week of December 4

This Sunday, Marshall Canales from High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin will be preaching. He will be preaching from the book of Philemon. Please pray for Marshall as he prepares to deliver God’s Word for our edification and God’s glory. You can read his preview below…

The preaching text for this Sunday will be Philemon 1:4-7. Our text comes from the shortest letter written by the Apostle Paul to an individual. Who is this individual? Well, we know there was a Colossian church meeting in his home (1:2) and that previously his servant, Onesimus, had stolen something from him and fled to Rome (1:17-19). At some point during his time in Rome, Onesimus meets Paul and is saved by God through Paul’s ministry (1:10-11). Though Paul sees benefit in keeping Onesimus with him for ministry (1:13), he knows it is better to send him back for the purpose of reconciliation (1:12-14). This is where the letter of Philemon picks up. Onesimus travels with Tychicus, who is delivering Paul’s letter to the Colossians (Col. 4:7-9), and shows up at Philemon’s door with this letter from Paul, seeking forgiveness. Our text from this letter exposes Paul’s thankfulness and prayer for Philemon. As we work through this text this Sunday we want to consider how this prayer is connected to the overall theme of the letter–reconciliation. I am looking forward to being with you all this Sunday morning!
