Our preaching text for Sunday will be John 10:1-10. This may be one of the most well-known chapters in John’s Gospel account, and for good reason. There doesn’t seem to be any gap of time between the end of chapter 9 and the start of chapter 10. In other words, Jesus is continuing his discourse with the Pharisees concerning the events of the blind man’s healing. They think they see, which in this case means they think they are in good standing with God. However, Jesus is telling them that they don’t see, they aren’t in good standing with God because they reject Jesus. Not only are they blind, but these are the religious leaders of the people of Israel, and they have proven themselves to be blind leaders in the way they handled the man healed of his blindness. In chapter 10 Jesus is going to take this opportunity to contrast himself with the religious leaders of Israel, and he will do this in a powerful and effective way. He will use the imagery of shepherding, showing that he is indeed the Good Shepherd who lays his life down for the sheep. This Sunday we will consider what it means for Jesus to be the “door” of the sheep (10:1-10) and next week we will consider what it means for Jesus to be the “good shepherd” of the sheep (10:11-21). May we all be nourished by the Word this week!
