The preaching text this Sunday will be John 10:11-21. These verses continue down the “figure of speech” path Jesus began in 10:1-10 to contrast himself with the Pharisees. The Pharisees think they are good shepherds of God’s people, they think they are good with God. Jesus is setting out to prove that neither of those things are true. They aren’t good shepherds because they care nothing for the sheep and they aren’t good with God because they reject Jesus as the Messiah. In other words, they don’t come to the Father through the way the Father has designated for his people to come, which is Jesus “the door of the sheep”. Now, Jesus is going to expand on the concept that he is the good shepherd and this is where our attention needs to be focused as well. What does it mean that Jesus is the “good” shepherd? It’s not enough to merely make the claim, so how does Jesus show that he’s the good shepherd? What is the result of this for the sheep of the good shepherd? What responses do you see from those who hear the words of Jesus? What does a right response look like? These are just some of the questions that you can ask as you read the text this week in preparation for corporate worship this coming Lord’s Day. May our minds, affections and wills be renewed by the Word this week!
