Sermon Preview – Week of January 29

This Sunday our preaching text will be John 10:22-42. We close out chapter 10, and in closing out this chapter we come to a critical break in John’s Gospel account. Jesus will be leaving Jerusalem for a short time only to reemerge in chapter 11, where the last week of his life will play out over the course of the rest of John’s account. However, before this major shift takes place from public ministry to being sacrificed on the cross, Jesus declares again who he is and invites the unbelieving to believe. This really is what John told us in his prologue and what we’ve seen unfold in a number of different ways for the first 10 chapters, “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:9-13). May our hearts be drawn in to the truth and grace of who Jesus is and what he’s done, and may we, by the grace of God, hear and follow the great shepherd of the sheep!
