Sermon Preview – Week of May 15

This Sunday our preaching text will be John 1:19-34. John (the author) alluded to our text in his prologue when he mentioned the witness of John the Baptist (1:6-8, 15). The body of John’s gospel begins here and over the next couple of weeks we will be taken into the days leading up to Jesus’ public ministry. The first thing John wants to do is…establish the witness of John the Baptist.  Can you imagine the most crucial, eternally important message coming from a guy that dressed in animal skins and ate bugs? Would this be the kind of person you would expect God to deliver His divine message of promise and fulfillment? Is God being irresponsible here? For example, would we store the most valuable diamond on the planet in an old paper sack with holes? Is that what’s happening here? I don’t think so, I think there is something else going on here. I believe that everything surrounding John the Baptist is just as it is meant to be. His status, appearance and diet all paint a picture of one that is lowly and humble so that all the attention is on that to which he points us. And, what we will see is, John the Baptist is pointing to Jesus, the Messiah. We have a lot to learn from John the Baptist, certainly and most urgently related to the message he proclaims but also in the way he conducts himself. May we grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus as we consider the text this week!
