Sermon Preview – Week of May 22

This Sunday our preaching text will be John 1:35-51. This is John’s account of the calling of the first disciples. And, while it contains less detail than Matthew, Mark and Luke, it provides powerful insight into this most important time before Jesus’ public ministry begins. All of us encounter different things, people and circumstances every day. Sometimes those encounters are surprising, other times they are expected. Sometimes they are welcome encounters and other times they aren’t.  Sometimes those encounters leave an impression, other times we have forgotten about them five minutes later. In our text this week, John is highlighting several encounters with Jesus. As you read through this text, see if you can identify how many encounters there are. What’s the nature of these encounters? What’s happening in these encounters? What’s the result of these encounters? What do they have to do with John’s gospel? Why do these encounters matter to me? I think most of us already know this, but I think what we will find is that encountering Jesus is not like all of the other encounters we experience on a daily basis, at least, it shouldn’t be. Those who encounter Jesus in these verses aren’t the same afterwards. We have, by the grace of God, the opportunity to encounter Jesus in these verses too. Will we be the same afterwards? I pray that we won’t, but that we will changed for His glory and our good!

*We will be observing the Lord’s Supper together on Sunday
