This Sunday we are back in John’s Gospel and our preaching text will be John 6:22-35. Jesus has just miraculously fed a crowd somewhere in the neighborhood of 20,000 people. The recipients of this miracle want to force him to be their king, so Jesus sends the disciples across the sea to Capernaum and he retreats away from the frenzied crowd. The next morning, when the crowd wakes up they notice that Jesus isn’t around, and he couldn’t have made it across to Capernaum without a boat, so where is he? Well, we know how Jesus made it across (John 6:16-21), but they don’t. So, they set out in search for Jesus and when they find him at the synagogue in Capernaum they engage in a long dialogue that is commonly referred to as “The bread of life discourse”. It’s here where Jesus gives the explicit meaning of the great feeding miracle that took place the night before. It’s here where Jesus outlines his person and purpose for the crowd following after him. It’s here where Jesus exposes the crowd’s superficial motivation in following him, their materialistic desires in wanting to make him king and their grave misunderstanding of God and His Word. Now, all of that exposure sounds pretty grim, but the good news is that Jesus is also making the path to eternal life clear. John 6 is such an important chapter for us and I pray that God will grant us understanding and will apply these eternal truths to our hearts!
