Sermon Preview – Week of January 30

This Sunday we will finish our study through the book of Philippians. Our text will be Philippians 4:21-23. I find myself (too often) flying through introductions and final greetings of epistles. We can treat them as if they are less important than the body of the letter. This as you know couldn’t be further from the truth. Introductions and final greetings are like bookends that hold up a row of books. They are sturdy, packed with truth and importance. Well, Lord willing and by His grace we will get a taste of this truth from our final verses this coming Lord’s Day. This final greeting is designed to encourage and build up the saints in Philippi. It points them and us to things like Christian unity and fellowship that exists beyond our local assemblies, the hope and power of the gospel to accomplish all of God’s purposes. This final greeting is designed to encourage the believer’s progress and joy in the faith. The bedrock of these things for God’s people is His grace, found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. It may seem like an elementary sort of thing, but don’t let that make you lax in your consideration of this text. This grace is what Paul prays for, believes in and hopes will go with the Philippians all the days of their lives, the thing that attends them as they fight the good fight of faith. Nothing is more important for us to understand as we sojourn here, on this earth, living as citizens of heaven in anticipation of Christ’s return. May God be glorified in us as we are built up in the faith!
