Sermon Preview – Week of September 11

The preaching text for Sunday will be John 5:9b-18. Over the next couple of chapters John is introducing us to the elevated opposition that Jesus will face for the remainder of his earthly life. Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath, which leads to the religious leaders accusing Jesus of breaking the Sabbath. While the issue surrounding the Sabbath isn’t the tipping point for the religious leaders, it certainly gets the ball rolling in that direction. God does not work in anything or in any way without purpose. He purposes in all things to display His glory, to expose unbelief, to illuminate truth, to call humanity to trust in His provision of grace. This means, the fact that Jesus heals this man on the Sabbath, knowing that it would create hostility with the Jewish religious leaders is purposeful. There is something that Jesus wants to show, wants to bring to the surface in relation to the Jewish religious leader’s approach to the Sabbath. What does the healing of the invalid have to do with their approach to the Sabbath? That’s what our text addresses this week. As we read, meditate and apply this scripture let’s remember that we must be humble in the way we approach our traditions. You see, traditions aren’t inspired and infallible and can in fact be spiritually dangerous. They can be useful, but only when they submit to the truth of God’s Word, His will and His way, and are intended for His glory. May we see, hear, understand and believe the truth of what we find in God’s Word this week!
