The Devoted Walk

Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
who seek him with their whole heart” Psalm 119.2

The psalmist continues his epic prayer of praise for God’s word with more announcement of blessings. Again we see that the unmatched favor of God falls on the one who “observes His testimonies.” This is the one who searches the Scripture and seeks to understand and obey what he finds therein; for he knows the Scripture contains the testimony of God to all truth regarding Him, His creation, and His will.

This psalmist then parallels the idea of one who observes God’s testimonies with one who seeks God with all his heart. The outward life of obedience to Scripture must be matched with an inward passionate pursuit of the God of the Scripture. “Heart” is used here to indicate one’s mind and understanding; it’s the seat of one’s inclinations and character. To seek God with all of your heart is to devote yourself to Him, fill your thoughts with Him, pursue Him with your passions.

When put with verse one then, we see the clear way to God’s ultimate blessing: (1) live blamelessly, (2) walk in the Word, (3) Observe (keep) His testimonies, and (4) seek Him with all your heart. This is not a step-by-step path. Rather the picture here is a life devoted to the Word of God and the God of the Word.

So friend, is this a picture of your life? Are you observing His testimonies this day? Will you seek the Lord with your whole heart—with all that you are?

Heavenly Father, may we truly seek you with our whole heart. May we faithfully observe your testimonies, dear Lord, affirming and keeping their truth. Amen.
