Week of January 9

I pray you were all encouraged in the Lord this past Sunday in meeting and hearing from the Klockenga’s and Keres’, our missionaries to the First Nations Peoples of Cat Lake in Northern Ontario. Please remember to pray for them as they teach and rest over the next couple of weeks in Los Fresnos before heading back to the mission field. May the Lord stir up in all of us a zeal and desire to make His name known among all peoples!

Now, this week, we turn our attention back to the book of Philippians where we begin our march to the end of this letter. Our text for this week will be Philippians 4:2-7. Paul is communicating the “last things” of his letter to them, as he eagerly anticipates his release from prison and reunion with his friends in Philippi. Knowing their struggles in Philippi, both internally and externally, Paul wants to root them in the peace of God. This text is where we find one of the most comforting verses in all of scripture, “And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus”. This verse is meant to be comforting, it is meant to be a beacon of light and hope in the raging storms of life. We will get to know more about this peace, but we also need to understand more about what comes before this wonderful promise. You see, before Paul gets to the peace of God in verse 7, he puts together a string of exhortations and connects them to the peace of God by the word “And” at the beginning of verse 7. So, what this tells us is, everything we have in verses 2-6 is connected to the peace of God in verse 7. What does that mean? This is, Lord willing, what we will work through on Sunday morning. Please take some time to read and think through the passage this week in preparation for worship. May the Lord grant us the kindness of growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ this week!
