Week of November 28

The preaching text this Sunday will be Philippians 3:7-11. In the beginning verses of chapter 3 Paul sounds the alarm against the false teachers proclaiming that salvation and God’s favor can found in anything other than Jesus Christ. In this particular case, it was the false teaching that a strict keeping of the law (handed down by Moses to the people of Israel at Mt. Sinai) is what made someone a true child of God. Paul warns the Church away from this dangerous teaching and points them to the truth of what makes someone a child of God, and that is the grace of God alone. He makes this point again by offering his own life as an illustration. If anyone’s pedigree, observance of and zeal for the law would earn them God’s favor it would have been Paul. Yet, none of those things made him righteous before God. He counts all of those things loss for the true gain of the grace in knowing Christ. In our text this week Paul gives us a comprehensive look at the grace of salvation. Having this comprehensive understanding of God’s grace in salvation will help us understand how Jesus Christ was Paul’s supreme treasure. It will help us understand why and how Paul lived a life that was sold-out for the cause of Christ. It will help us understand how Paul, a man enduring many sorrows and difficulties, is able to rejoice. We should want to understand that so that Christ will be our supreme treasure, so that we will live lives that are sold-out for the cause of Christ, so that our joy and hope remains and we stand firm in the faith as the storms of life roll in. May God grant us the grace to grow in the knowledge of who He is and who He has made us to be in Christ!
