Of Highest Value

“The law of your mouth is better to me
than thousands of gold and silver pieces.” Psalm 119.72

The psalmist brings another stanza to a close with this cry of pure, unadulterated praise for God’s word. His language may seem hyperbolic; but he does not exaggerate. This is truth. The law of God, his special revelation to man, is far more valuable than any earthly riches. Scripture is more valuable than the highest of earthly riches.

In extolling this truth, the psalmist not only states the truth; he also makes it personal. The law of God’s mouth is not only better than riches. God’s truth is better to him. He does not simply acknowledge the value of Scripture. He aligns his thinking and affections with this truth.

We must value God’s law in this way. The value of Scripture can’t simply be a truth we mentally agree to. It must be fixed in our minds and hearts. Then, God’s word will capture our affections and guide our actions. We truly must treasure the revelation of God.

How much do you treasure the word of God? How do your thoughts and affections reveal a high value of Scripture? In what ways do your actions show that you treasure the law of God?

Heavenly Father, you are good. You have shown astounding grace in giving us your word. Cause us, dear Lord, to truly treasure your revelation to us. Set our affections on your truth—that every thought, word, and deed may bring praise to your holy name. Amen.
