Our Sure Defense

“The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but I do not stray from your precepts.” Psalm 119.110

This verse gives a parallel to the previous verse. The psalmist is continually having to defend his life (109) because the wicked have laid a snare for him (110). In response to these enemies, he commits himself to remembering the law of God (109) and to not straying from God’s precepts (110).

As we mentioned yesterday, this is a repeated theme of the poet in Psalm 119. But friend, don’t think that means you can breeze past this truth. Don’t think you’ve already gotten the point. Instead, consider that God has inspired the poet to be repetitive on this issue for your good. Consider that God understands the dangers that you face better than you do. He knows you need these reminders.

We must remember that spiritual enemies—and some physical ones—would like nothing more than to catch us in a snare. The world would love to knock us off course. We must remain vigilant. We must cling to the word, for it is our only sure defense.

Let me ask again: How are you arming yourself with the word of God? In what ways are you seeking God and his biblical truth to guard you from spiritual attacks? From the world?

Our Redeemer and Strong Tower, our Refuge and our God, we praise you. Thank you, dear Lord, for giving us life and protecting our lives. Teach us from your word, Father, that we might stay on the right path, that we not stumble and fall into the snares of the world. Amen.
