“By your appointment they stand this day,
for all things are your servants.” Psalm 119.91

This beautiful stanza continues the poets praise of the Lord’s reliability and the reliability of his word. He continues to point the reader to the creative work of God. In the previous verse, he pointed out that God has created the earth and that it stands fast. He noted that this is a sign of God’s faithfulness.

Here, he continues that point by extending it. The earth continues to stand because God makes it stand. Not only that, but all things are servants of God. This is because God has created all things. We can trust God, no matter how dark and depressing the world may appear, no matter which men harbor notions of power and control, because we know that all things are created by God. Because he has created all things, he controls all things. Hallelujah!

Friend, if you ever find yourself tempted to doubt God, to doubt what he has revealed in his word, remember that he upholds all things by his mighty hand. All of his creation is ultimately his servant, as it is all moving to his desired ends. It is all designed to—and all ultimately does—glorify him. Praise the Lord!

How often do you reflect on the awesome sovereignty of God, the truth that all things serve his sovereign purposes? Take some time to meditate on this truth today and praise God for how he upholds and directs his creation.

Father, you uphold all things with your mighty hand. The heavens and earth stand today because you have created and sustained them. Comfort us with this truth today, dear Lord. May we rejoice in you. Amen.
