The preaching text for congregational worship on Sunday will be John 2:13-25. We are still at the very beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. From Cana in Galilee, where Jesus has performed his first miracle (turning water into wine), he and his disciples travel south to Jerusalem. They go to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover, as was the custom of the day. As Jesus enters the crowded city he comes to the temple, and it is here that John records Jesus’ cleansing of the temple. The temple was the place where God met with His people. But, what the temple was meant to be and what it was being used for were two different things. This kindled a righteous anger in Jesus, and it is a good reminder for us about how seriously God takes worship. And, in turn, how seriously we should take worshiping God according to His terms. Is our worship of God what it is intended to be, or are we making it something of our own imagination and convenience? Jesus is making a bold declaration here. He is telling us something about Himself in relation to the temple that we need to pay careful attention to. May the Lord richly bless through the gift of His Word!
