Sermon Preview – Week of May 29

This Sunday our preaching text will be John 2:1-12. Having worked through John’s account of the calling of the first disciples, we venture into John’s account of Jesus’ first sign or miracle. This begins a public ministry that will carry us through to chapter twelve. Again, we should remember that John has been very clear about his purpose in reporting these signs (20:30-31), that those exposed would believe in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. We need to be cautious that we avoid a problem that seemed to plague many in the days of Jesus’ earthly ministry. That is, a tendency to be content with being impressed with the work of the miracle itself. We need to remember that the miracles we see in Jesus’ ministry are called “signs” and as one writer has said, “this means that Jesus’ miracles are miracles with a message”. We don’t need to stop at saying, “wow, that is really impressive”, we need to press into the message of the miracle. What is the message of the miracle in our text this week? Surely, it isn’t just about replenishing the supply of wine at this wedding! No, there is something much more glorious in view here. May the Lord be gracious and kind in illuminating His Word to us this week in preparation for corporate worship!

Our Great God (New Song)

Verse 1
Eternal God unchanging mysterious and unknown
Your boundless love
Unfailing grace and mercy shown
Bright seraphim in ceaseless flight
Around Your glorious throne
They raise their voices day and night
In praise to You alone

Hallelujah glory be to our great God
Hallelujah glory be to our great God

Verse 2
Lord we are weak and frail
Helpless in the storm
Surround us with Your angels
Hold us in Your arms
Our cold and ruthless enemy
His pleasure is our harm
Rise up O Lord and he will flee
Before our sov’reign God

Verse 3
Let ev’ry creature in the sea
And ev’ry flying bird
Let ev’ry mountain
Ev’ry field and valley of the earth
Let all the moons and all the stars
In all the universe
Sing praises to the living God
Who rules them by His WordBe Unto Your Name

Be Unto Your Name

O Fount Of Love

Speak O Lord
